1. Description of G•IPRs Logo Design

1.1 The Design of Characters

Key word "IPRs" is decided based on "Intellectual Property", the topic of this website.

Note: IPRs is the abbreviation of Intellectual Property.

We choose another key character "G" based on the scope of the website topic, "Global".

Note: "G" in "Global" has two meanings in this website:

(a) taking department laws as the classification criteria, "G" represents "General" or "Complete" including the jurisprudence researches on the main intellectual property categories such as patent, trademark, copyright, etc. and their relieves.

(b) taking the legal locations as the classification criteria, "G" represents "General" or "Complete" including the intellectual property law researches of China, Hong Kong, Chinese Tai Wan, Macao, America, Russia, etc.

The website domain is giprs.org on the basis of the topic and scope of this website and the key words "G" and "IPRs".

The name of this website is defined as "Global IPRs Research Center" based on the topic and scope of website and its domain name.

"G·IPRs" is first used for short and as the website Logo based on the key words and domain name of the website.

Note: it is not understandable for the public if directly taking domain name "GIPRS" or changing the font of characters as the Logo. The author used "IPRs" which is familiar to the public to explain that the topic of this website is "Intellectual Property". "G" and "IPRs" is separated by a dot, which leaves more space for the composition and also makes the public easily connect "G" before the separating character with "Global" in the name of the website based on the classification word of the website and the contents of the articles. "G·IPRs" can not only express the name, topic and scope of this website most succinctly but also keep consistent with the domain name of the website maximatily.

1.2 Design of Pattern

According to the Logo "G·IPRs" created by the above procedure and combining the characteristics of the design of web page, we used the variants of the font and made modification to the current font by graphics software in order to avoid the monotone of the web page format, composition and colour system, and after 3 months' efforts, the final work is selected from many candidate works. The spaces among characters, initial part and ending part of "G·IPRs", especially the initiation, turning point stroke and the ending part of “G”, the location and size of the separating dot and the portion between the lowercase "S" and other capitalized characters are all elaborately processed to try our best to make the Logo beautiful and creative no matter it is a single work or put in the web page design. In terms of the single Logo, based on the initiation of the words, the change and combination of basic design elements of dots, lines, curves and angle, etc are properly used to compose the picture according to the basic theory and principle of industrial arts. In terms of putting the Logo in the whole web page design, through the creatively application of basic design elements, the color of the words of the Logo and the web page has a sharp contrast of black and white, and the words have a sharp contrast of standardized font and changed font, which avoid the over-strictness of the web page style and the monotone of the color system and has an effect of "Put a Cherry on the Top".

To sum up, two works, the Logo of G·IPRs and its web page design are one set works created for the website http://www.giprs.org/, which are penetrated by the design concept of "Minimalism". Through elaborated design, choice and combination of the website name, topic, domain name, Logo, picture, words, format, style and other elements, we try to express the characteristics of professional, academic and unique of this website.

2. Description of G·IPRs Web Page Design

G·IPRs Web Page Design mainly includes web page planar design and format design and we decided the following design principle during the creation:

(a) to express the style of stableness and preciseness that professional legal website requires;

(b) to take all factors into consideration by web page planar design and format design including the technique solution which presents the works and the optimization of website management system running efficiency;

(c) to fully consider the scientificalness of the website contents category and the items arrangement and the convenience of navigating or searching the website data by users;

(d) and on basis of meeting the above requirements, the design shall have originality and conform to the aesthetical standard which is generally accepted by the public.

Based on the above principles, during the creation, G•IPRs web page design:

(a) defined the plan of using the fewest colors. i.e., only using black and white, these two main colors to compose pictures to embody the style of stableness and preciseness that generally required by professional legal website;

(b) defined the plan of using the fewest pictures. i.e., except for the Logo of the website, website name, and one picture on the summary of the home page, the whole website uses none picture, Flash and other elements to ensure the simplicity of the technique solution of embodying the works to the maximum extent and the optimization of website management system running efficiency;

(c) adopted the "tree structure" which can expand or collapse as the longitudinal main classification module of the website and combined the menu, button and links of the website and other vertical classification to repeatedly adjusting the website format to make the classification meet the requirements of legal profession and meanwhile compatible to the simplicity of navigating or researching website data by users;

(d) on the basis of using two main colors, black and white, to compose the picture and to avoid the negative effects of monotonousness and stiffness caused by the design plan of "the fewest color" and "the fewest picture", except for the website button, word colors in menu links, word link colors in the website content pages elaborately arranged, we creatively take words (including Logo, website name, menu, links and all kinds of words in the content pages of the website) as the basic elements to compose the picture and combine with format design, which makes the works not only enjoy originality but also be acceptable to the aesthetic standard of the public.
